Aquinas is a young Aboriginal filmaker with a disability living in Fitzroy Crossing in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia. Born in Derby, his language group is Wangkatjunka and he has lived all of his life in Fitzroy Crossing. Through his artwork, Aquinas captures his passion for his home, country, family and football.
Aquinas has been participating in DADAA Inc artistic workshops for more than three years – developing his skills in a multiplicity of art mediums. He specialises in multi-media and has produced a few digital works including “Something Bush and Something People”. “Something Bush” talks about his cultural connection to country and his love of going bush. “Something People “explores Aquinas’ connection to his family and community. In March 2009, Aquinas worked with Broome-based Aboriginal production house Wawili Pitjas to produce a new work titled “Sumting Fidroy”. This work will appear on the National Indigenous Television Station as part of a program which will showcase personalities throughout the Kimberley region.
Aquinas is an optimistic individual, well loved and a wonderful role model for youth in the community. When asked about his art, he talks about having a unique view of the world – shooting his works from his wheelchair. He believes he is ‘just like everyone else, just in a wheelchair’ and enjoys revealing his distinctive viewpoint through his art.
