Mangkaja artists have a rich and unique history, with many of them having been involved in culturally significant national art projects, such as the Ngurrara Canvas - a large-scale collaborative project that was used in a native title claim in the Great Sandy Desert.
In order to capture the stories of these highly-acclaimed artists, and explain the intricate connection between their artwork and their culture and country, Mangkaja has commenced a film project titled the "Biographies Project".
The project involves 16 artist profiles that will be produced as separate DVDs for the purpose of historical documentation and the promotion of the artists, as well as contributing to the economic, educational and cultural development of the community. Each profile has been filmed in local language, with English subtitles added, and captures the stories of the artists and their work. The project is being directed by a Broome-based Indigenous film production company, Wawili Pitjas, with contribution and mentorship of a local Fitzroy Crossing film-maker, Aquinas Crowe.
The launch date of the Biographies Project will coincide with an exhibition and film night profiling local emerging artists Lisa Uhl (visual artist) and Aquinas Crowe (film-maker).
